The Spelling of My Name

by Jeffri Phenix (he/him)

The spelling of my first name Jeffri is always commented on in the West and in the UK where I live, as no one has seen the phonetical spelling I have!

But it made sense to my mum who is Malay. My surname is also unusual with the spelling of Phenix. We used to think it was of Irish origin before my dad’s ancestors settled in America, but my sister tracked the name down to a small northern English town of Fenwick!

Obviously, none of my ancestors could spell!
