Tastes of my Childhood

by Lauren Tai

The tastes of my childhood have always been 粥 (pronounced as ‘jook’) made with leftover roast duck we bought whenever my family and I used to make the day trip to London for special occasions. As I got older and started to remember and embrace our family trips to Hong Kong to see my grandma, food because a huge part of the way my family connected to our heritage and to each other. One of the classic dishes we would regularly have is beef tripe noodles, always in very small and local restaurant. This was one of the first dishes I learnt to order in Cantonese and I always used to get so nervous when I’d ask the waiter’s for it in my very British Cantonese accent.

The second dish which reminds me of childhood is Mango sago, there’s a place in HK I used to go to everyday called Hui Lau Shan, it’s mango desserts were my absolute favourite, and I would sit in the afternoon and eat all the mango desserts, sometimes sheltering from typhoon rains or the sweltering summer heat.
